The Gypsy Queen makes a striking impression from the moment you set eyes on her, with her colorful gypsy costume encrusted with golden coins and jewels. Like an image pulled out of a vintage Hollywood film, her presence is powerful and draws you into the intriguing visual fable in which she stars. The exotic landscape behind her is filled with blooming lotus flowers, and a full moon shines in the evening sky as it reflects onto the tranquil lake below. The tension created by the mixture of warm and cool tones evokes a mysterious quality while the dreamy color palette transforms your room into a palace garden. Impasto brush strokes are scattered across the surface of the painting, adding a luscious tactile dimension to its allure. The mood the painting evokes is tranquil, yet she inspires curiosity from viewers who never tire of staring into her green eyes and questioning what truth is revealed by the tarot card held in her hand.
This is the first in a series of three fantasy compositions in oils with a theme of mystical, red-haired women: The Gypsy Queen, Lady of the Lotus, and Khrystal's Garden.
These three paintings represent my interpretation of The Three Graces. However, rather than representing charm, beauty, and creativity - historic attributes assigned to woman from a paternal perspective - they represent three natural phases of human enlightenment: self-acceptance, liberation, and wholeness.
The Gypsy Queen represents the phase of self-acceptance, as woman claims her right to exist outside of the expectations or judgments of others. The word "gypsy" itself is a racial slur - a derogatory word intended to assign shame or lowness of character to the Roma people - yet she stands proudly as a queen amongst women.
The Gypsy Queen has come to understand that her life experience is a treasure earned through the trials and tribulations of her life's journey, like the golden coins that dangle on her dancing belt. She holds no judgement of herself or others, recognizing that all souls must define their own journey and come into wisdom in their own time. She stands confidently amidst a hundred lotus blossoms of transcendence, dressed in the silks and jewels of a gypsy dancer while holding the tarot card, "The Fool" - an ancient symbol of new beginnings.
